Stress fracture treatment

If you’re experiencing pain in your feet or shins, it’s important to have it looked at by a podiatrist as soon as possible. The pain could be an indication of an underlying stress fracture, which if left untreated can result in longer recovery times. Podiatry on Pako offers assessments and stress fracture treatments in our Geelong clinic.

What is a stress fracture?

Constant micro trauma and overuse can cause excessive loading in the bones of the feet and legs. This can cause bone stress and pain, commonly in the feet and shins. X-rays and bone scans can be organised to diagnose the condition correctly. Early diagnosis can detect early bone reaction and make treatment easier and recovery quicker.

Causes of stress fractures

Many factors can be involved, including:

  • Poor footwear
  • Foot biomechanics
  • Overtraining
  • Pronation

A biomechanical assessment will check for a combination of many factors, including bone fatigue, which can lead to more serious fractures.

Stress fracture treatment

After correct diagnosis, eliminating the causative factors must be addressed and corrected. Reduced activity and rest is important, in conjunction with appropriate treatment. Early signs need to be recognised as the problem can progress from simple pain to potential fracture of the bone.

Talk to our Geelong podiatrists about stress fracture treatments, including custom orthotics to reduce stresses on the bones of the foot and relieve pain.
